Drakenzicht Main House
The architecture is a song of praise to the splendour of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Mountains. Inside the cathedral-like structure of the main house, the gothic scale of the view is simply breathtaking. One feels small in the presence of such natural grandeur. Enjoy an unobstructed view of gorge, valley, cliff and peak: Giants Castle, Injasuthi, Champagne Castle and Cleft Peak are all in plain view.
The main house at Drakenzicht Mountain Getaway is nestled peacefully at the foot of the Central Berg on 50 acres of natural beauty and can accommodate 9 guests in 4 bedrooms.
More than 3km of cleared trails wind through the meadows and forest, with benches dotting the landscape. Quiet tranquillity.
Main Bedroom (Hoep-hoep)
The Hoep-hoep room is your ticket to a duvet day. With an unsurpassed view of “The Dragon” you are privy to her moods and costume changes. Pull open the black-out curtains to see if she’s wearing her cloak of mist or a garland of sun rays. Climb back in the king size bed and see the landscape changing throughout the day. In the evening her highness shrouds her peaks in mystery and the night sky becomes prominent. Leave the curtains open and it feels like sleeping under the stars. Thunderstorms through the main bedroom window becomes a cinematic experience.
Hoep-hoep has ambient and adjustable lighting; air-conditioning; sliding doors opening onto a private balcony; and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Built-in closets ensure ample storage space for clothes and personal belongings.
Double bedroom (Suikerbekkie)
Suikerbekkie is a spacious double room offering privacy and its own garden entrance. Whether you prefer a king size bed or two single beds, Suikerbekke is inviting and refreshing after a stroll or hike in the heat of summer. Step through the sliding doors leading to Suikerbekkie’s private patio and enjoy the birdsong and lush surroundings.
Suikerbekkie has built-in cupboards, air-conditioning and an en-suite bathroom with both shower and bath.
Double bedroom (Piet-my-Vrou)
Like Suikerbekkie, Piet-my-Vrou offers two guests a cosy corner with regenerating privacy. It is a spacious room and again guests have the option of a king size bed or two single beds. Piet-my-Vrou’s sliding doors lead directly into the leafy garden and the entrance to the forest path is close-by. The room is air-conditioned; has built-in cupboards; and the en-suite bathroom has a walk-in shower.
Singles bedroom (Kwikstertjie)
Kwikstertjie is a social space, a chatter room for three adults or children sharing. Three single beds can be converted into a king size bed and a single bed. Kwikstertjie is air-conditioned and has an adjacent bathroom with both bath and shower. The built-in cupboard space is ample and the sliding doors lead to the established garden.
Kwikstertjie bathroom
This serene space offers a harmonious blend of comfort and style, perfect for unwinding after a long day. Immerse yourself in a warm, bubbly bath and let the stress melt away. Experience a refreshing shower that revitalises your senses. A stylish and functional basin provides ample space for your daily routine.
The loft
A treehouse games room with transformative properties – that’s the loft area. Once there, the magic of the treetop view extends to integrate the guest in a leafy fantasy. The room itself is a thing of architectural wonder with its fairytale detail.
It is worth going backpacking and dragging a sleeping bag along in order to be able to book this room as an overnight backpacking facility. This backpacking service is on offer and mattresses are available for this purpose. Arrangements to this end should be made with the owners. The loft has its own bathroom with a walk-in shower.
Kitchen
Whip up delectable creations inspired by the view from this open-plan workspace. Nature is never too far from the fully equipped kitchen, fitted with a large gas stove and electric oven, a microwave oven, two fridges, an air fryer, crockery, cutlery and a coffee filter machine.
An image of the waterfall in the gorge on the Drakenzicht property decorates the back wall and serves as a splash plate.
The scullery behind the kitchen (where dirty dishes can be hidden from all the loveliness in the open plan area) is equipped with a dishwasher and two kitchen sinks as well as extra cupboard space and one of the two fridges.
Lounge
The open plan living area – with lounge and dining facilities – is most definitely the house’s main attraction. Its awe-inspiring glass façade ensures 180 degrees of continuous natural splendour. Slide open the doors and invite the mountain air inside. The magnificent view from the wrap-around stoep remains intact when moving into the lounge – it is impossible to lose sight of “die draak” with her valleys, hills and cliffs. She imposes and makes her presence known.
The television is connected to wifi with access to Netflix and satellite TV can be provided on request.
The living area boasts a stone fireplace and effective underfloor heating, as well as air-conditioning.
The piano in the lounge area is tuned and in a good condition, begging to be played and treated with care.
The View
The grandeur of the view over the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Mountains is a humbling experience. It uplifts any spirit and invigorates the soul. The view from Drakenzicht is unique in that it encompasses the sleepy beauty of the valley below, as well as the breathtaking drama of “The Dragon” above: Giants Castle, Injasuthi, Champagne Castle and Cleft Peak are all in plain view.
More than 3 km of cleared trails wind through the meadows and forest on the 50 acre property, with benches dotting the landscape to enjoy the quiet tranquillity.
Turning away from the mountain, magnificent old trees and sweeping meadows come into view. An abundant variety of indigenous mountain flowers can be found throughout the year – differing from season to season.
Scenery
The scenery varies from one end of the 50 acre property to the next. Pine forest scenes with autumnal abundance to the east make way for mild mountain meadows when moving west. Find a way through the shrubs down to the gorge and experience a wonderworld of waterfalls and damp air scented with pure rainforest.
The established garden provides a colourful and cultivated scenery with a different sense of calm.
